iPhone will not connect to HomePod Mini

I can connect my MacBook to my new HomePod mini very easily but for some reason my iPhone 11 will not connect. I have read the Support articles but no joy. Maybe there is something I am missing or a 'trick' that solves this issue. Please advise. Thank you.
