How can I remove the Desktop and Documents folders from iCloud Drive

For some time I was syncing my Mac's Desktop & Documents folders to iCloud. So inside my iCloud Drive folder there were Desktop and Documents folders, which made sense. I have since turned that feature off because I no longer want to sync these two folders from my Mac with iCloud. All the files have been safely moved to my home folder and out of those folders iCloud folders. So, no issues there.

But I am now stuck with a "Documents" and a "Desktop" folder inside iCloud Drive. I'm no longer syncing to these, so they don't need to be there. They're useless right now in iCloud Drive. But anytime I try to delete them, they reappear.

How can I permanently remove these no-longer-synced Desktop and Documents folders? Thank you!

Mac mini, macOS 10.12
