MacMail 16.0 stopped spell checking

I use the MacMail app on my MacBook Pro. It has stopped providing spell checking and I cannot get it activated again. It also now does not repeat key strokes as fast as it used to. Deleting a sentence takes twice as long.

Any suggestions?
