apple id sign in requested - when I didn’t. Didn’t allow but question..

Just had a random apple id sign in requested pop up on my Apple devices when I didn’t request to sign in myself and the location appeared to be in China ! Obviously I didn’t allow it so my 2 factor security worked but does this mean someone knows my Apple ID password or just that they tried to use my Apple ID? I’m thinking if I got the sign in request it means they were successful with the password. Is this correct?
