Pairing Lavalier lapel mics with 2020 M1 Macbook Air

I am researching lapel mics, Lavalier specifically, for 2020 M1 Macbook Air.

I have noticed posts saying that the USB receiver does not support a mic function.

I came across another post saying that by using a "TRS to TRRS connector or type-c sound connector" this makes allows the mic connection to work.

2 questions:

Is this the only solution?

Secondly, I get different search results for TRS to TRRS connector and type-c sound connector. Does this sound connector need to go in the audio jack or the usb C port?
