Limited Need for Landscape on Home and Lock Screen:

  • Focus on Portrait Usage: iPhones are primarily used in portrait mode for tasks like texting, browsing, and social media. Apps are designed with this orientation in mind and the Home Screen with its app icons is optimized for a vertical layout. Rotation on the Home Screen wouldn't be very useful.
  • Widget Integration: With iOS 14, Apple introduced widgets on the Home Screen. These information tiles work best in a portrait grid layout. Forcing a landscape view with widgets would require a redesign or potentially make them unusable.

Impact on Wallpaper Design:

  • Predominantly Portrait Wallpapers: As Apple prioritizes portrait orientation, it makes sense that their default wallpapers and many third-party options are designed specifically for portrait viewing.
  • Limited Use for Landscape Images: Since landscape rotation isn't a core function of the Home and Lock Screens, there's less incentive for designers to create landscape-oriented wallpapers. These wallpapers wouldn't be seen as often and wouldn't provide an optimal user experience.
