Are you certain that your Qstarz GPS is compatible with your iPad? You may also need the correct companion App for your receiver.
If your receiver is designed for use with iPad - and you have the correct App installed - you would be best advised to seek technical assistance from the manufacturer.

I’m only able to use it for an NMEA source for the Giai gps App. I have yet to test it fully and may not be getting some of the Qstarz features such as motion detect or minimum distance between plot points. More testing is needed.
I can also use a cheap puck gps, usbA but through a lightning adaptor. Both need a cable that means I can’t charge the iPad while using it for navigation, but Hey that is better than no gps at all.

There are Bluetooth GPS receivers that instead of providing basic NMEA data, are fully compatible with iPadOS - and do not require a manufacturer's companion App.
Perhaps consider a GNS3000, Garmin GLO or BadElf - although there are other suitable choices from which to choose.

Hmm, I think I jumped the gun a bit there, with an accuracy of 50m or so in an open area, and comparing the tracks ((Gaia) with my Android phone, I have to admit the two gps I tested are not much better than no gps.
Grr!
Thanks for your input, I will get a Garmin Glo locally online. The GNS3000 would have to come from overseas at a much higher price, but certainly has more features.

A further option might be to consider replacement of your WiFi Only iPad with a WiFi+Cellular model. WiFi+Cellular iPads have built-in GNSS/GPS capabilities.

The iPad I am using was surplus to requirement at the end of a project. So the price was right.

Given your locale, I can see that finding a GNS3000 might indeed be problematic. Having tried a Google search, I couldn't readily find a distributor in Australia.
