internet speed slow on iMac but fast on modem and iPhone
iMac, macOS 10.13
How old is your Mac? It could be that its old and therefore the harddisk or the browser is slow
If it is an older Mac you might want to use a different browser instead of safari, because external browsers tends to get updates for a longer period of time
Hi, thank you for your help. the iMac is only 4 years old and is up to date with Sonoma 14.4.1. I tried with different browsers, but that did not make a difference. I appreciate your suggestions. Apple tech checked it out, it's not the computer. It is hopefully the internet company.
1) What does your internet service provides speed test and/or https://www.speedtest.net/ show for internet speed...?
2) Have you installed any third party Anti-virus, Protecting, Cleaning software or using a VPN service...?
Found out from internet tech that came to my home that unless the computer is hooked up directly to the modem with ethernet cable, the wifi speed will be slow. I'm getting 500+/- and not 1200 that I was told by internet salesclerk. Thank you for your help.

You may want to consider changing ISPs if that is the type of support you get from them. Yes, it may be true that an Ethernet (wired) connection typically outperforms (bandwidth-wise) vs. Wi-Fi, but it sounds more like that the wireless gateway (or whatever they are providing you) is not adequate ... or, at least, not properly configured to provide your wireless equipment with the best possible performance.
Curious, what is the make & model of this wireless gateway? I'm assuming that your ISP provided this as part of their Internet service package. Is that correct?
Where is your iMac located, with respect to this gateway? Same room, different room, or different floor? What is the basic contruction material used in your home's walls?
Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?
What is the make & model of your "modem"? How do you connect your iMac to this modem, by Ethernet or by Wi-Fi?
