HDR videos in photos sometimes play just audio with a black screen

When playing videos in the photos app, occasionally, all of my HDR videos are suddenly affected. The thumbnail for every HDR video will show an image of what the video is. When I select an HDR video and try to play it in photos, the audio plays correctly, but all I see is a black screen for the duration of the video. At the bottom of the screen, there is that tiny slider which all of the images for the as it plays with a bar you can move around, idk what it is called. The slider shows all of the images for the video as normal over the rest of the screen which is black while the HDR video plays. I’ve tried messing with the brightness using my control center when this happens but the screen is still black just for HDR videos though, nothing else. Restarting iphone, resetting wifi etc. does not fix it. I know someone else with this same issue as well. I have not tried playing videos in iCloud. It seems to be a strange issue because it only happens occasionally, however when it occurs it affects all HDR videos only, then I try again sometime later and it is back to normal, it seems to randomly go away. This last time this bug occurred, I noticed that I had reduce white point turned on in my iphone settings. I am not sure if this is related to the issue or just a coincidence, however while I was playing an HDR video with my brightness up all the way, the video was playing as a black screen with audio, I clicked three times on the lock button on the side of my phone to do the accessibility shortcut to unreduce white point, and the images for the video immediately appeared when ai did this. I then looked at the other HDR videos in my photos, and they will also play normally. Then, I reduced white point using the same shortcut and turned my brightness back down on control center. I went back to photos and now the HDR videos are still playing normally even with white point reduced. I will try this shortcut again if the playback of HDR videos become affected again.

It sounds like you're encountering a peculiar issue with HDR video playback on your iPhone 13. The fact that it's sporadic and only affects HDR videos adds to the mystery. Here are some troubleshooting steps you could try, please check after each step...

  1. Since you mentioned you haven't tried playing videos in iCloud, it might be worth checking if there's any difference in playback behavior when streaming from iCloud versus local storage.
  2. Try to identify any patterns or triggers that consistently precede the issue. For instance, does it happen more frequently under certain conditions (e.g., low battery, specific apps running in the background)?
  3. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  4. Reset Network Settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings: Only network settings are removed.
    1. When you reset network settings, previously used networks and VPN settings that weren’t installed by a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. Wi-Fi is turned off and then back on, disconnecting you from any network you’re on. The Wi-Fi and Ask to Join Networks settings remain turned on.
    2. To remove VPN settings installed by a configuration profile, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the configuration profile, then tap Remove Profile. This also removes other settings and accounts provided by the profile. See Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone in this guide.
    3. To remove network settings installed by MDM, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the management, then tap Remove Management. This also removes other settings and certificates provided by MDM. See “Mobile device management (MDM)” in the iOS Deployment Reference.
    4. Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
  5. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  6. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.
