How to unpair Apple Watch without access to Apple ID?

Following the Apple Legacy process I’ve been left with devices with an inactive Apple ID. The iWatch is paired to a legacy account-I’ve already gone through the process. That means I can’t use Find My (although it still shows up on there) I can’t use the iCloud account to get to Find My. I can’t unpair it on the actual iPhone because it requires me to input the Apple password and when I do that, it says the Apple ID isn’t active. On iCloud I can sign into the Apple ID, but I can’t access family sharing or find my. I tried calling Apple to see if they can get me a receipt using a shipping invoice and they refused since it’s my dead husband‘s name on the invoice and I don’t sound enough like a John apparently. I’ve asked them to do a criminal investigation if they think I’m a scammer. I finally found a back door to get a receipt. Now I’ve been waiting three days and they haven’t taken the activation lock off.

(What ever you do, don’t die under these specific circumstances. Don’t leave your family with no access to your Apple world. I can’t think of anything more to do to obtain access to the iWatch. Luckily I’ll be the next one to go and I turned off my legacy key. Oh. That’s assuming I own the things I’m leaving behind anyway. Nobody but Apple is worried about an iWatch and an old set of AirPods.

The activation lock is removed once the legacy contact has provided the information to Apple. The watch should just need a factory reset. See Request access to an Apple account as a Legacy Contact - Apple Support

Try:

  • Put your watch on its charger and keep it there until you complete these steps.
  • Press and hold the side button until you see the power button in the upper-right corner of the display.
  • Press and hold the Digital Crown until you see Erase all content and settings.
  • Tap Reset, then tap Reset again to confirm.
  • Wait for the process to finish.

I went through the legacy process already and according to the information they give me all the activation locks have been removed, but according to Apple technical staff, these items are still locked. At least presently I can use the watch partly. It’s collecting data and reporting to the phone from that ID. I think your suggesting would erase it, but it wouldn’t take the activation lock off, would it? They say if it didn’t have an activation lock, it would already have that welcome screen rather than one of the watch faces and App Library and…

Thank you for the link to the Legacy process. That’s what started all of this and I just spoke with them on Friday. They say this is a technical problem and not their area. Told me to work with the Apple support staff, but that’s what I’ve been doing for six weeks now already. I need somebody with some really specialized knowledge and I thought I might find someone here.
