Sorry, you are correct. Not sure where I got the Control from. Yes, Option+8 or Option+9 produce the square brackets.

As a small addition to what Phil0124 said: it is very useful to have the Keyboard Viewer available.

You can press the several modifier keys (Option, Control, Shift, Command) and their respective combinations to see what they will produce.

If the input layout is set to Norwegian, the square brackets should be available when pressing the control+option+8 and control+option+9 keys.

Where do you see this? Apple normally doesn't use Control for characters, only option and option shift. On my Norwegian input source the square brackets are on the option level.
