I have a wall mounted smart TV and want to connect an Apple TV device. As a HDMI cable is not an option, can I use a wireless HDMI adapter to connect both devices? The distance between the devices is no more than 4 feet.

Wireless HDMI video products, with all their limitations (HDMI 1.4, possible interference), still need to HDMI-cable-connect to a sender unit and a receiver unit, so that doesn’t solve the no-space problem, as you still need to plug in to the back of the TV.
No, you need an HDMI connection between the Apple TV and the TV. If you happen to have a home theater where the TV is controlled by a receiver. you can plug the ATV's HDMI to the Receiver and using the Receivers HDMI connection to the TV.

No. Apple TV requires an HDMI cable for connecting. No dongling.
