How do I keep my pulse running and open during a workout?

During a workout, I would like to look at my watch for my current pulse. I activate the heart monitor and get a reading. After a bit the watch goes dark and I have to reactivate the watch. How do I set it up so I can see my pulse all during my workout without it going dark?

Apple Watch dims the screen to preserve battery life, which is especially helpful during workouts as all of the sensors are monitoring you constantly to gather great data about your exercise.

If you have an Apple Watch with Always On (Series 5 and later: Use the Always On feature with your Apple Watch - Apple Support) you can see your heart rate using a complication (Change the watch face on your Apple Watch - Apple Support) or by starting a workout in the Workouts app, which should also display your heart rate persistently.
