Mac cannot read SD card

I plugged my microSD card into my card reader plugged into my macOS 11. I get the message "The disk you attached was not readable by this computer."

It is a 256GB microSD card with ExFAT formatting.

I have never experienced this issue before. This card works perfectly in my camera. This card used to work fine in my mac. Other cards work perfectly fine in both my camera and mac.

I tried to read this card in my other computer, which is an older mac. It has the same issue.

How can I read this card?

What does "initialize" do?

I also have this issue with the microSD card I am using with my security camera. If I format the card on the Mac(ExFAT), the security camera says it is not correctly formatted. After I format it in the camera, my Mac cannot read the card anymore(even though it shows up as EXFAT in Disk Utility).

I would think it means the same thing as "reformat and erase" – which is not what you want to do if there is data that you are trying to retrieve from the card.
