What year model is the iMac?

see > Identify your iMac model - Apple Support

You must have a 2019 or later model iMac to run the latest macOS Sonoma.

To update the macOS version for your year model iMac, see > Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

If you go into About This Mac in the Apple () menu, what does it say your model is?

If your iMac is able to run High Sierra now, the "end of the line" as far as macOS updates might be anywhere from High Sierra (10.13.*) to Ventura (13.*), depending on the hardware model year / time of year.

I don't believe there are any iMacs able to run both High Sierra and Sonoma, unless you count the iMac Pro (2017).

Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and if the iMac is a 2012 or newer model, then on the download link for a newer OS. Otherwise, it can't run an OS higher than 10.13.6.

Catalina and above won't run 32-bit software and split the functions of iTunes up; if you choose one of them, use Go64 as well.

For reference, Macs run macOS, not iOS.
