iPhone remote erase with Lock Mode still pending

Hi,

My phone was stolen a few days ago and I marked it as lost. Unfortunately, it said lock mode pending as the thief immediately turned off the iPhone. Now I have decided to remote erase the data as I am afraid they’ll have access to it even though I changed my Apple ID password. Will the remote erase disable my pending lock mode or will the lock mode still be activated the next time the device connects to the internet regardless of the erase?
