Those are two separate issues.


iCloud may not work anymore for Apple TV (3rd generation), due to changes in iCloud itself, and the legacy model Apple TV not updating with it.

  1. My Photo Stream has been discontinued for all users.
  2. Advanced Data Protection for iCloud as an account property (per iOS 16.2/iPadOS 16.2/macOS 13.1) may invalidate some iCloud services on devices with older software.

Apple now lists iCloud system requirements on Apple TV as: tvOS 9.2 for iCloud Photos specifically; tvOS 16 for iCloud Shared Photo Library; tvOS 9 for Family Sharing; tvOS 17 or later recommended for all advertised iCloud services. None of that includes Apple TV Software 7.9.


Not signing in for iCloud wouldn’t affect streaming services or AirPlay, though.

Streaming services like Apple TV+ require signing in for the iTunes Store in Settings.

AirPlay requires an activated Apple TV box. Normally, this would be satisfied by signing in for the iTunes Store.

AirPlay is not the same for all content, and may also differ by AirPlay receiving device. Keep that in mind.

- Some content providers block AirPlay (notably Netflix and a few pay TV provider apps);

- Some content providers (mainly websites) make no effort to make streams AirPlay compatible;

- Some content provider support AirPlay from their mobile app, but not from their website/from a computer.

- Some content providers require an AirPlay 2-compatible receiving device. Apple TV (3rd generation) is not AirPlay 2-compatible;

- Do verify the AirPlay compatibility on the site of the content provider. They should list what is required.
