Native Apple Apps Not Opening (or Not Responding) Since Upgrading to 14.4.1

Since upgrading to 14.4.1, I've had all kinds of problems with my iMac, rendering some of its most important uses (to me) broken. Specifically, I can't get Preview of TextEdit to consistently open. If they do open, it takes about 15 minutes and then as soon as I try to save or work on a document the app freezes up. This also happens with Mail, although not every time. Help?!

This may or may not help but if you haven't already done so, try rebooting into safemode then back to normal and test it out again:

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Safe Mode boot time can take a little extra time to boot, as it's doing the following:

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

Loads only required system extensions and prevents 3rd party apps and extensions from loading

Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

To avoid the question / answer and question answer scenario

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Does the issue present in this mode ?

Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

Download the Application Etrecheck  ( External Link ) directly from the Developer.

The Application is Not a " Silver Bullet "  and is  only a tool to examine the Hardware / Software used on this computer

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer Hardware / Software used on this computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - >>>> using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last ) <<<<

Lastly - should you decide to use and post the Report now or at a later time, we are willing to have a very close look and offer some insights

Remove any Third Party Security Software, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizers and Commercial VPNS as per the Developers Instruction

None of the above bring any value to the computer and actually to exactly the opposite

Welcome

Was the secondary account that was created an Administrator Account ?

If not, log out of that account and then into the Original Admin Account.

From that account, make the secondary account an Admin Account.

There is not harm in having two Admin Accounts and sometime having two is better.

It appears there is some piece of Third Party Software installed in the Original Admin account that has caused this " Preview of TextEdit " issue

If one what to further trouble shot the Original Admin account ?

Suggest loving back into that account and then use the Etrecheck application to run its analysis

The post back the results via the method already mentioned

Thanks for the suggestion. As it so happens, I am connected via Ethernet so downloaded the Sonoma 14.4.1 update via Ethernet. Perhaps of interest, I have better, but not complete, success when I use the computer without my external HD's attached. That said, Preview and TextEdit still don't open (just spin)and I can't access my Music & Photo libraries, which is a big part of what I use on my iMac. I'm also seeing articles online warning people not to update to Sonoma for reasons similar to mine. So I'm hoping Apple creates a fix. That I can't do 75% of what I bought this iMac for is extremely frustrating. Thanks again for taking the time to write.

Thanks for all the good help here. I followed your suggestions and learned the following:

  • In Safe Mode, the problem persisted although it wasn't quite as bad. Ultimately, both TextEdit and Preview went into perpetual spin mode but I was able to initially open some documents. Still, after a few minutes, it was no real improvement.
  • Logging back in in Normal Boot, the problem persisted.
  • However, when I created a new user, I was able to make both Preview and TextEdit work as the new user.

Do you have a suggestion what I should do now that we may have discovered the problem is with my Main User?

Thanks again!
