Whatsapp background activity drains battery

I notice that my brandnew iPhone 15 pro max battery isn't lasting more than 6-8 hour of battery screen. Whatsapp is the most battery consuming app with 3-4 hours (daily) of background activity usage (vs 1 hour of whatsapp screen usage daily), is these battery usage normal? (iOS 17.4.1)

Shut off Background Refresh for the app at Settings > General > Background App Refresh. It is not unusual for social media apps to use a large portion of your battery.

WhatsApp claims to be a privacy centric platform, but you can clearly see the data it collects about you in the Privacy page for the app in the App Store. Sending all this data about you to their servers will consume your battery. Here is the data it collects about you as they note on their own page in the App Store.

  • Purchases
  • Contact Info
  • Financial Info
  • Contacts
  • Usage Data
  • Location (why does it want to know your location?)
  • User Content
  • Identifiers
