FCPX, working with chapters, question

55 minute film. Need to add chapters that can be seen in Vimeo and on YouTube. Haven't used chapters for a long time. I see I can set the beginning and END of a chapter now. My questions:

Does setting the 'END' of a chapter have any effect on the playthrough? Does the playthrough stop if I've set the 'END' of a chapter.

This is a complicated science film. I would like to be able to make the MAJOR chapter headings in CAPS, but also have sub-chapter type headings in NON-CAPS (of course the both are just chapter markers). Is there anything I need to watch out for?

I'm not sure I know about 'timestamps'.

What Ben Low wants to display on YouTube are "Timestamps." This is it, right?

[Creators Best Friend] steps:

  1. Purchase [Creators Best Friend](about $10) and install it.
  2. Add chapter markers to the timeline.
  3. Select Creators Best Friend extension button” from the menu. →Drag the project icon into Creators Best Friend window.
  4. Copy to clipboard. →Paste it in the YouTube description field.

I think the role of Creators Best Friend is to extract only the chapter information of the project and arrange it in chronological order. I am utilizing chapters to create Timestamps. Chapters can record timecode and table of contents text, so you can simply copy and paste them yourself after uploading to YouTube. It's not that hard work.

Whether it is necessary to pay $10 and have an app take up SSD space and arrange chapter information is up to the user's values.

I'm not sure LocaAlicia. I haven't done any tests yet. I was only making a Chapter marker. I was vaguely remembering that I did this once years ago ... and the Chapter headings showed up automatically on YouTube.

But I may be mis-remembering.

I was looking at using 'Creators Best Friend' to be able to list the 'Chapters and time-stamps?' on YouTube. But haven't followed up yet.

Thank you BenB,

My favourite codec: Quicktime. What's that little orangey ball attached to the 'chapter marker' that you can drag to the right however much you want - making a thin dotted line. I don't get its use.

It looks like I can just make a bunch of Chapter Markers as I used to, export out a file containing the chapter markers imbedded. And also create an XML file that I can open with 'Creators Best Friend' to make me a chapter list with timestamps that works with YouTube.

I'm wondering if it will work also with Vimeo. Haven't been able to figure it out yet. Will try in the morning with my double espresso. Thank you for your help.... B

Got it: orange ball = thumbnail for DVD. Which is intriguing I find, as no one is using DVD's anymore, and my memory of the chapter markers didn't have the 'orange ball' the last time I used them.

You're absolutely right, a wrapper not a codec ... s'cuse me. I'm usually working in Quicktime, on these particular films, and the chapter markers seem to be working fine.

Thanks for your help BenB.
