Error occurs when trying to Edit or Export photos

Message is "Photos cannot load edits for this image". Also, many photos will not complete the export command with an error message stating "unknown error -1 cannot create file".....

Not sure if it's icloud related, but think not, as it impacts photos on the hard drive of my mac studio??

It sounds like you are using iCloud to sync your mac and iPhone. Do you have "Optimize Storage" checked for Photos on your Studio? Is your Photos Library listed as your System Library-- in Settings>General or by quitting Photos and option-clicking on the Photos icon.

In Settings>General, do you have "Copy items" checked?

Here, "Use as System Library" is grayed out because it already is.

What happens exactly, rather than "cannot edit" etc? When you choose Edit, what happens? Does Photos quit? Does the picture pop up and won't edit? What do you see?

The things you list would be happen if you don't have the full sized images on your local drive, but rely on iCloud to help reduce the local storage load. Then Photos would try to download the full image so you could edit or print or export it. If iCloud isn't available, which it wouldn't be if this were not your System Library, then it wouldn't work.

Another possibility is that you don't have "Copy Items" checked and Photos has lost touch with your referenced files.

Appreciate all the replies - thank you!

Been away, hence delay in responding.

  1. Box for using system photo library is greyed out.
  2. Copy items is already checked.
  3. Library is on my Macintosh HD (not on external)
  4. Have 3886 pics "unable to upload" in the Photo's folder with over 6k pics in full library.
  5. When choosing one of the affected pics in the main library it appears low res with a small cloud symbol in bottom right with ! in it and then comment "An error occurred while loading a higher quality version of this photo. Please try again later.
  6. My broadband is fine and high speed.

"Box for using system photo library is greyed out"

This means that the library is already the system photos library.

The cloud icon in the corner of the image is indicating that Photos cannot access the originals in iCloud.

There are several possible reasons for this.

  • For example, if there is a problem with your iCloud account. Do you have enough free storage in iCloud to upload the missing images? Or is there a problem with your payment method? Sometimes we simply need to update the information for the payment method.
  • Is your Wi-Fi connection fast and reliable?
  • Could a firewall or an antivirus filter be blocking the connection to APple's cloud servers?
  • Are there any items in your library shown as "Unable to upload" in the status bar below the "All Photos" tab?

Also, you may want to check, if the photos in question are still in iCloud. You can check this, if you view your iCloud Photos Library in a web browser on your iCloud webpage at www.icloud.com and open the Photos.app on that web page.

If the photos have been migrated from an Aperture or iPhoto Library, and they have been edited in Aperture or Photo, you cannot edit them further in Photos, unless you revert the photo to the original.

The edits applied in Aperture or iPhoto will have been migrated as previews of the edited versions, as Photos cannot replicate the adjustments applied in the other apps. The previews may not be of a sufficient quality or not available at all, if we did not set Aperture to render high-quality previews before the migration to Photos. We have to discard the previous edits, if we want to edit these Photos in Photos. Try, if you can edit one of the problematic photos when you use the command "Image > revert to original" before you try to edit the photo.
