iphone 13 and 14 Read Receipt Issue

I have an iPhone 13 Pro and my husband has an iPhone 14. We both have “Read Receipts” turned on in Settings - Messages. All of a sudden we are no longer seeing “read” receipts when either of us sends messages to each other, however we are seeing them for other contacts. I also discovered another strange thing. When I am within a text message for someone, and I touch their picture, I can also see the “send receipt” option. This shows on all my contacts EXCEPT on my or my husbands. The option does not even show up when we touch our picture within a text message. Is this why we don’t see read receipts for each other??
