Avoid creating a gap in timeline when deleting or trimming a clip

If I delete a still image or trim a video clip in the timeline it creates an empty space where that media was deleted. The only way I know to close that space is to select all media to the right then drag it to the left filling that blank space. Shouldn't that space be filled automatically once the media is deleted? Is there a setting that should be selected to trigger that function? Your help is appreciated. Thanks..

how can I make the remaining file or all remaining files to the right of what I deleted automatically move to the left?

The black line is the primary storyline. It is magnetic so that there are no gaps between adjacent clips. The role of the Primary storyline is to automatically fill in the gaps after trimming. GH010607 should be inserted in the Primary storyline. Since you have inserted a music clip, the magnet function is disabled.

If you perform steps 1 and 2, the clips will be placed as shown and the magnet will work.👍

what is "BMG"?

I wrote BGM, =Back Ground Music

Thanks to everyone for your help but I regret to tell you I still can't figure it out. I've read the page BenB suggested and I can see the Connecting icon in the bottom left corner of CH010607.

It's my understanding once the first few seconds of the file is deleted, the remaining file stays in place because it is "Connected" to the audio file. But my original question remains. Once the video file is trimmed or a jpg is deleted from the timeline, how can I make the remaining file or all remaining files to the right of what I deleted automatically move to the left?

Also, what is "BMG"?

I even did more digging on the internet to try and figure it out but I'm just not getting it. Perhaps what I am trying to accomplish isn't an option?

Thanks for your patience and any help you can provide.

@JGToll, You can flatten your FCP learning curve, especially about the magnetic timeline, with these recommended free tutorials.
