Screenshots to desktop only found in recent folder

Greetings, First I searched the Community for answers and cannot find anything, and I rebooted my MacBook Pro. So, any screenshots on my MacBook Pro show the thumbnail after the screenshot (so I know one was taken) then it will disappear. I set up screenshots setting such that they are png files that go directly to the desktop. Now, however, they do not show up on the desktop as before. I only can find them the "Recents" folder, and then they are greyed out. When I show enclosing folder, they are indeed on the desktop but as the greyed out files. I can open them in Preview and export/save as a jpg or pdf, which then shows on the desktop as normal. Any suggestions on why this is occurring?
