Find my using Apple Watch no longer owned

i upgraded my son from an Apple Watch to an iPhone, but I can t find

him in find my…neither his location nor his phone appear. In his account settings for find my it says that it is using his Apple Watch, but we gave that back to Apple and removed it from his account.
