To turn off the Desktop and Documents option of iCloud Drive, see the following from Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

Turn off Desktop and Documents

  1. From your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings. In macOS Monterey or earlier, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
  2. Click Apple ID, then click iCloud.
  3. Under Apps Using iCloud, click iCloud Drive.
  4. Turn off Desktop & Documents Folders.
  5. Click Done.

What happens when you turn off Desktop and Documents

When you turn off Desktop & Documents Folders, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new Desktop and Documents folder is created on your Mac in the home folder. You can move files from iCloud Drive to your Mac as you need them, or select all of your files and drag them to the place you want to keep them.

or to completely turn off iCloud Drive see the following from that same support document:

What happens when you turn off iCloud Drive or sign out of iCloud

If you turn off iCloud Drive or sign out of iCloud, a new Desktop and Documents folder is created in your home folder. You also have the option to keep a local copy of your files that are in iCloud Drive. If you keep a local copy of your files in iCloud Drive, they're copied to a folder called iCloud Drive (Archive) in your home folder. You can move any files that were in your iCloud Desktop and Documents to your new local Desktop and Documents.

I'm not sure what the cause is, but the first thing I would do is wait. Since you just upgraded this afternoon and iCloud Drive Desktop and Documents apparently got turned on then (shouldn't have happened without you agreeing but may not have been obvious or something may have gone wrong). I wouldn't do anything until all of the files have had time to upload to iCloud Drive.

When it has updated, you should be able to view your files in Finder by using the iCloud section of the Finder sidebar (or the Finder "Go" menu). See the "View iCloud status" section of Get file, folder, and disk information on Mac - Apple Support for details of what the cloud icons mean.

The upload could take a long time. There may also be an issue if you don't have sufficient iCloud storage for the files that it is trying to upload.

I'm suspecting that once the upload completes, you will then have the ability to turn off Desktop and Documents or all of iCloud Drive as described in my original response.

In your original post you stated "... and now find that my desktop files areall in cloud" -- what made you think that (e.g., what evidence did you have that they were in iCloud)?

Also, open a Finder window and look at the Sidebar -- is there an iCloud section in the sidebar and if so, what is shown there? If not, click on the Finder "Go" menu in the menubar; click on the iCloud Drive item there if there is one. What is listed in iCloud Drive window in Finder?

Sorry the numbers came automatically.

Numbers 4 and 5 you saw are the response to Yr q3.

Other left side, I open iClod Drive, it tells me that I can turn on icDrive to access anytime on my devices. Then the option to open Apple ID settings.

Your further question, I upgraded on very new macmini this afternoon.

I presume that I should now sign in and turn on ?
