Using a Macbook Air, can I plug a flash drive into one of the usb ports and view the photos that are stored on the flash drive?
I've tried searching for this topic but cannot find anything that addresses this.

If you just want to look through the pictures in a folder on the drive, then you can just double click to open the folder and point at a picture. Tapping the space bar does a "Quicklook" that will show the picture. Then you can scroll through them with the up and down keys.
If you want a slide show of the pictures, then a good app to use is Preview, which comes installed on Macs. With Preview open, you can do File>Open and click on the folder containing the pictures. Then choose View>Slideshow to automatically show the pictures in the folder in full screen.
