Experiencing Issues with iMessage and SMS on Apple Watch Series 7 GPS

Hello everyone,

I'm having a consistent issue with my Apple Watch Series 7 GPS: it always send iMessages whenever both Wi-Fi and cellular of my iphone are off, instead of switching to SMS as expected. This happens even though the watch should technically not have any network connection independent of my iPhone. Like auto iMessage everytime on my apple watch even iPhone behaves perfect in switching iMessage to SMS but my apple watch only send iMessage.

Has anyone else faced this? I'd appreciate any advice or solutions that could help resolve this issue. Thank you!

The Apple Watch GPS model is physically incapable of sending SMS. It can ONLY send SMS by relaying through the iPhone’s cellular radio.

If you basically disable the iPhone’s ability to send SMS, and access the internet, the Apple Watch still has WiFi and can send iMessage to the users if the user is capable of receiving iMessage messages.

NOTE: Even a cellular Apple Watch has to relay SMS via the iPhone, as the Apple Watch cellular radio is data only, and performs phone calls using VoIP (Voice over IP), which does not support the special signaling needed for SMS.

If you wish to send SMS, then the iPhone must be powered on, it must be connected to the internet, and it must be signed into iMessage (which relays the SMS request to the iPhone). The Apple watch must be signed into iMessage, and be able to talk to the iPhone via either Bluetooth, WiFi internet access, or cellular internet access.

The Apple Watch CANNOT send SMS. It does not have the hardware to do that. ONLY the iPhone can send SMS on behalf of the Apple Watch. So it is impossible to keep the iPhone out of the SMS loop.

Get your iPhone to do what you desire, and do not cut communications between your iPhone and your Apple Watch, stay logged into iMessage, and do not turn off the iPhone’s cellular access. Then, the Apple Watch should send SMS.

The Apple Watch does not know, that iMessage is not available at this time, because the iPhone is switched off or can't be reached, containing this information.

So the Apple Watch uses the iMessage, since the recipient has used iMessage previously.

Only the iPhone can send SMS directly, the watch only sends the text message to the iPhone, which sends it in the end, depending on the availability of the service.

Without the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and your Apple Watch, you can not send/receive SMS.

2. To receive SMS, MMS, or push notifications from third-party apps on your cellular Apple Watch, your paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, but it doesn't need to be nearby. You also need to be signed in to iMessage on your iPhone to use Messages on your watch.

If my watch is connected to my iPhone and I want to send a text message to a known Android phone number, I have to choose the phone number from my contacts, then fill in the text, and the "Send" button is green.

In case of a known iPhone number or Apple ID, the message in the text field says "iMesssage" before I type the message into that and send it.

The Apple Watch is choosing SMS or iMessage according to the contact info saved in the contact app.

What happens, if you type in the Android phone number manually on your Apple Watch, before sending the text message as SMS?

Sure thing dear, I agree but the issue is i have several contacts that have iMessages and SMS enabled, iphone switches to both iMessage n SMS automatically on base of wifi or cellular connection but for all these kinda contacts on apple watch is only showing iMessage option on the other side (only sms enabled contacts) shows the sms thats working fine but with the iphone users that have the iMessage enabled its not switching to sms even the wifi or cellular is not active on iphone and watch properly connected to iphone

Lemme again try to explain my issue:

I am encountering an issue with my Apple Watch and need assistance. My Apple Watch defaults to sending iMessages instead of SMS, even when I intend to send an SMS. Here is a summary of the issue:

• Apple ID: My Apple Watch and iPhone are signed in with the same Apple ID.

• Software: Both devices are updated to the latest software versions.

Steps Already Taken:

1. Restarted both my iPhone and Apple Watch.

2. Reset network settings on my iPhone.

3. Unpaired and re-paired my Apple Watch.

4. Tried sending messages with iMessage disabled on my iPhone (Apple Watch sends SMS successfully in this state).

5. Verified that contacts are correctly set up and not duplicated.

6. Ensured that iMessage is turned on and configured correctly on my iPhone.

Problem Description:

• When iMessage is enabled, my Apple Watch tries to send messages as iMessages, even when I want to send SMS.

• Disabling iMessage on my iPhone forces my Apple Watch to send SMS, which works correctly.

• On my iPhone, both SMS and iMessage are working as expected, switching automatically based on the recipient’s device or my device's internet connection.

Desired Outcome:

I need my Apple Watch to automatically switch to SMS when iMessage is unavailable, just as my iPhone does. This issue is causing significant inconvenience, and I need assistance to resolve it.

Thank you for your help.

just supposed this number +923456789012

Its owner is a iphone user and it has iMessage enabled, when i try to send SMS or iMessage via my iphone its works perfect like if iMessage isnt available the button's already green and send text as SMS and if internet connection is available on both sides its automatically sends iMessages (button's already blue) on iphone.

issue is whenever i try to reply or send any text via apple watch it only shows me the iMessage option no matter iMessage is available or not (apple watch doesn't switch between iMessage n sms automatically as expected to be work but on iphone its automatically switches to sms/imessages working perfectly)

here is an ss of my apple watch (now iMessage isnt available but apple is only showing me iMessage reply but on the same time on iphone its showing sms reply option)

thank you for clarification but ny concern is why it isn't switching iMessage/SMS on apple watch ?

if i disable iMessages in iphone it allows me to send sms (keeping in mind everything im talking are th scenarios where iPhone is connected to apple watch), well if it seems my Apple Watch relies on my iPhone to determine message type availability. Is there a workaround to force the watch to recognize the need to send SMS instead of iMessage? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

As mentioned, the Apple Watch can not decide itself wether to use SMS or iMessage. Unless you have the Cellular model, your connected iPhone decides how to send the message it received from your Apple Watch, in order to send it to your recipient's contact number.

SMS is a carrier based service and as long as your Apple Watch has not cellular connection without the iPhone, it sends text messages as iMessages, which are the default settings for a non cellular model and an iPhone being out of reach.
