iPod cannot be recognised by iMac after being connect.

I have an imac with the Sonoma operating system with all new updates and am unable to locate my ipod Nano 5th generation in the "Finder" after attaching the ipod to the computer with the correct cable. The ipod lights up and appears on my desktop and can be ejected but I can't sync anything or get information about whats on the ipod. Apple support says the old ipod may be incompatable with the Sonoma system but there might be a workaround. This was working fine until about a week ago. Any suggestions?
