Pausing Quicktime Screen Recordings

I cannot produce a PAUSE button during screen recording using quicktime.

Using a macbook pro 15in 2019 touchbar, OS Monterey 12.7.4

I have tried holding OPTION, pressing esc, following other videos and support threads, but I cannot change the RECORD (on/off) button to a PAUSE button in order to temporarily pause screen recording.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sorry, but the ability to pause a recording in QT was removed a couple versions ago. you now need to stop a recording and then start another, or edit out portions of a continuously recorded video.
