Not syncing iCloud due to lack of disk space

I have just upgraded my iCloud storage space to 2T. Syncing of my files is not possible due to insuficient disk space, despite that I am trying to upload everything on the iCloud and NOT on my Mac -because its disk space is indeed very small.

Any ideas on how I can uitlise the 2T iCloud storage space through my Mac, without having to use the webpage all the time?

What I was doing so far was creating aliases of specific iCloud folders on my desktop, without syncing the Desktop to the iCloud. The downside is that if it syncs, then all iCloud goes insane...(as I recently found out). Should I keep up doing the same, or there any better suggestions?
