Video format of recorded videos changed to hevc format!?

I noticed that my old recorded videos on iphone that were shot in h 264 format, were automatically changed to hevc format. This reduced the quality dramatically! Does this happen when I updated iOS? Can I convert them back to h264?

thanks for your help.

regards,

david

There are a couple things to clarify about HEVC and your iPhone videos:

  1. HEVC Doesn't Reduce Quality: HEVC (H.265) is actually a more efficient codec than H.264, meaning it can achieve the same quality with smaller file sizes. It's possible there's a different reason the quality seems lower in your videos.
  2. Videos Don't Automatically Convert: iOS updates wouldn't automatically change the format of existing videos on your iPhone. The videos likely were recorded in HEVC from the beginning, especially if they were filmed after you upgraded to an iPhone model that supports HEVC recording (iPhone 11 and later).

it is strange that when photographs are downloaded from iphone to desktop, they are converted from HEIC to jpg format and thereby it size and quality increases.

Converting a photo from HEIC to JPG – or any other format – would not increase quality. You will get at most the same quality that was present in the original. Given that JPEG uses lossy compression, the converted photo will likely have at least marginally worse quality than the original.

The size may increase, but size is not the same thing as quality.

Hey there,

Look, I don't know if the videos were initially shot in h.264 or in h.265 hevc. All I can confidently say is, regardless, when transferred to PC the video info would read h.264 as a codec. Now if I transfer the very same video from iphone to Pc the codec is h.265, lower file size and bad quality: I don't know what the **** happened with iOS.

Best solution : (only if you want to work on videos on PC or Mac), is to use Wetransfer (just make sure to toggle "Most compatible" in options below

good luck

While smartphones themselves can't harbor malicious intent, we must actively fortify their defenses. Tighten your device settings, be mindful of how you sync, and protect your digital treasure trove by safeguarding sensitive information with your loved ones. Don't underestimate the power of simple security measures. Employ strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and regularly update software.

However, the vulnerabilities lie in our usage and connectivity. Unsecured settings, careless syncing, and oversharing sensitive information can transform this innocuous device into a Trojan horse for attackers. Vigilance is key.

If you feel an unauthorized person/app is remotely using, controlling or monitoring your device, then that is possible only if you have done one or more of the following Don'ts...

  1. Don't hand over an iPhone to kids or to a stranger without Enabling Guided Access
  2. Don't share Apple IDs
  3. Don't Jailbreak
  4. Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device
  5. Don't give in to Phishing
  6. Don't plug in your device in Airports and Public places through third-party cables and trust the device. Beware of Juice Jacking. (Especially in India)
  7. Don't leave your iPhone unlocked and unattended in public places like offices, schools, malls, etc.

If one of the above is true then quickly change the Apple ID Password and Return iPhone settings to their defaults.

Thanks so much for your reply. I noticed now that videos have been all the time in the same format (HEVC). But what bothers me is that the quality of my old videos that I have downloaded to my computer last year are much better quality in comparison to same videos if I download them now. Previously they were also more than twice as large. For example: a video that I downloaded last year is 40 MB on my desktop. This very same video on my iphone is now 19 MB. If I download this very same video to my desktop now, it will be now 19 MB on my desktop and much poorer quality than version of the same video that I downloaded last year. It is also interesting that the new version I cannot open in either Photos or in Media Player - I would need a HEVC extension. It only opens in VLC.

Does is it have anything to do with the transfer? I use "Keep originals" option in Photos Settings.

Thanks so much again.

I actually tried both Automatic and Keep originals in Photos App on iphone. It doesn't work.

it is strange that when photographs are downloaded from iphone to desktop, they are converted from HEIC to jpg format and thereby it size and quality increases. This does work for videos which are transfered from iphone to desktop in same HEVC format. This is also the reason why the qulity on the desktop is poor

Sir,

I don't see how it is constructive and helpful to deny one's experience. If the person says the quality degraded then trust that it did.

I experience the same issue as our fellow.

For the same video, if I transfer it today the quality is much lesser and the codec info on PC now shows h.265 whereas the copy of the same video, from the same iphone that I had transferred months prior on the very same PC shows h.264:

Do you have an idea on what would explain that and how to remediate to it?
