How to fix screen fluttering issue while typing in MacBook Pro

While typing a message my screen began flutter very rapidly, showing the my screen as it was while typing. Pressing escape, option, command turned the screen off but it started “fluttering” spontaneously for 29 seconds and the screen went black again. The 29 second interval repeated each time. If I closed the lid and opened it again it resumed the flutter.
