Importing pictures into Photos app is easy. However often there are a lot of undated or out of date order images. Can I use the application to sort into date order within the import folder.

No, that is not possible. It is the way Photos has been designed. All albums that Photos is creating for us automatically are having a fixed sort order. Instead of offering one album that can sort on our own, Photos is creating several albums with a d different sort order.
The imports album is always sorted by the date of the import, and All Photos is showing us the photos sorted by the date they have been taken.
To sort the newly imported photos you would have to select the photos in Imports, then add them to a new album. Then sort your new album by the date.
