iPod touch gen 1 too old for iTunes

I found an old iPod touch, but it shows a screen prompting me to connect it to iTunes. I downloaded iTunes for windows10, but the device doesn't pop up. According to some research the iPod is too old for the current iTunes. What am I supposed to do now? Is the iPod just unusable? Basically I'm locked out of the iPod since need to connect to iTunes, but iTunes won't recognize the device because it's too old. Now what?
