How to upgrade MacOS on MacBook Pro

I’m trying to upgrade the OS on my old 2012 MacBook Pro, and when I try it says the compatibility is good and works, then I hit get, but it says “The requested version of MacOS is not available” I really want to upgrade it so I can use it as a daily and use stuff as apps and not have to use the web. Please help! Thanks!

For 2012 MacBook Pros, Catalina is the end of the line.

Catalina is not going to be good enough to let you run current software from the likes of Adobe and Microsoft, but I believe it will be enough to let you run current versions of Firefox, LibreOffice, and the Affinity V2 programs.

Note that if you upgrade to Catalina, 32-bit applications will stop working. Also, iTunes will go away; in Catalina, its functions are split between several applications (Music, TV, Podcasts, Books) and the Finder.
