Apple care and cracked scree

Let’s say I cracked my iPhone screen earlier today. Can I buy apple care coverage now? Also, if I can buy apple care coverage now, will it cover the cracked screen since it was cracked before the coverage was bought? This happened to my friend and they want to know if it’ll still work.
