touch screen not working

touch screen randomly stopped working. i am able to see all my notifications as they come up but cannot open them at all. i tried forcing the shut down by pressing the top volume buttom and then the bottom, and then holding down the power button and that didnt work. apple suggested that i replace my screen but i dont know if that could be the issue. before i spend $330 i was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.
