Should i upgrade 27" iMac (2019) from Big Sur to Sonoma?
I have a 2019 27" iMac with the i5 intel processor; Memory 8GB; 313.09GB available storage of 2.12TB
can i successfully upgrade to Sonoma without issues? how can i avoid pitfalls?

If it was mine I would upgrade it. I would. I'd be sure to make a backup first (a good idea even when not doing an upgrade).

Yes, I would do the upgrade.
No known pitfalls with Sonoma. I would always do a backup first though.
If you go to the Apple logo at top left -> System Preferences -> Software Update you'll find the latest available OS will be available to install.
Yes, it should have been done close to a year ago. You should always keep Mac OS up to date, it a good idea to check for updates about 1x per month or in Settings to set it to do that for you.
