External USB wifi adapter that works with Monterey and above

what external usb wifi adapters work with… - Apple Community

My use case is to be able to use my wifi for internet sharing from my MBP running Monterey,

but for that I don't want to use the wired network as the main network connected to the router.

I want to do this free of a cable running from the router. This is the scenario.

  1. I want to connect to my home network via VPN for which I would like to use an external WiFi adapter.
  2. Use the built-in WiFi adapter and share my internet connection so other external devices can connect to it.

This way my traffic from other devices can be routed via external WiFi to my home network. This is mainly for travel purposes. This works, but for now I have to carry a Cat5 cable with me that I have to run from the router to my laptop, and then share my internet using WiFi.

In my case, I want the ability to do this entirely using WiFi so that I am not bogged down by cables.

If there was an option to put 2 WiFi radios inside my Macbook pro - I would be open to that too, but

I am sure latter is not an option.

PS: I was forced to upgrade to Monterey as most of the browsers stopped supporting upgrades for

OS releases older than that.

Thank you.

The problem with this is that the Mac realistically can only connect via one type of protocol at a time.

You could configure your WiFi router to allow two channels of communication, which might be more advantageous if you need two connections. Contact your WiFi router support line to assist in the configuration.

And why are you using VPN? Is it for work or school network, or to avoid detection by people monitoring network traffic? If the latter, it is better to use incognito browsing on the web browser.

Is a tip I wrote about browser compatibility if you are looking for older OS compatibility with web browsers.

Thanks for the response "a brody" - however, I usually need to do this while traveling, so I can't make

changes to the WiFi router configurations at a hotel or AirBNB for example. VPN so that I can have

traffic routed from home - some for work and other for watching some cable TV, which otherwise

detects that I am out of country and restricts it.

How does incognito browsing help? It would still expose the IP address of where the request is

coming from and consequently deny it. Correct.

I am sort of befuddled that external WiFi adapters are not available for MacOS Monterey and above,

so I have to usually travel with a long Cat 5 cable, though another option could be to carry my own

WiFI router and use that as a pass through, but still ease of using a USB WiFi adapter on one of my

MacBook Pro and have it act as a router seems like the best option, if I could use it. Thanks.

A VPN while traveling is still not a really great situation. You are better off finding some secure WiFi at a school, library, or coworking space where you are visiting.

JiWire is a good place to search for WiFi. I don't recommend using hotel WiFi, unless supplied by their business centers. Even better for you would be to get an unlimited data plan on cellular and tether your cell phone for WiFi than use the hotel WiFi which can be inconsistent at best because so many people are sharing the same network.

When traveling abroad, unfortunately that I can't really help you because of copyright laws by country. What you ask is not something I feel comfortable posting in light of the rules of the community. In fact my initial post here was deleted the moment I posted. Try the private browsing on each available browser to see how well it works for your needs.

Ecosia and DuckDuckGo both purport to have better private browsing. I have not evaluated how much better it actually is.

No I don't have it, I just know that being Ethernet it needs only the built-in Ethernet Drivers, but does need Power , for the Wifi Radio hence the USB part of it.

If your MBP has an Ethernet port & a free USB port, then I'm reasonably certain it should work...

1. WiFi repeater, 2. WiFi bridge ( IP layer or MAC layer transparent transmission), 3. WiFi-AP hotspots.

It's been ages, & it wasn't this product, but closer to the one you have that needs drivers, I think it was in OSX 10.2.6 through 10.4.11 that I used it for Internet Sharing, you'd set it up from Airport to Computers using Ethernet.
