My account is locked on iMac desktop

After restarting I tried command R to reset password but the screen to reset did not come up. Still have the enter password screen saying “your account is locked.”

If you have an Apple Silicon iMac, command+R won't work to enable Recovery mode. Instead, press and hold the power button from a switched-off state, and in the boot selector, press the gear icon.

  • If asked to enter the admin password, press "Forgot all passwords". Then enter the Apple ID used on the iMac and enter the verification code sent to other devices. If asked, select a user that you want to reset the password for.
  • If not, you'll successfully enter recovery mode. From there, Utilities (in the menubar) > Terminal, and type "reset password" If asked to select an admin user you know the password for, click “Forgot all passwords?”. Then, click "Deactivate Mac" and "Deactivate" to confirm. If you now see an activation lock window, enter your Apple ID and password. After this, you will need to enter the new password.
