Referring to a USB CD/DVD burner. I originally had it plugged into a USB hub when getting this message but I now have it plugged directly into my Mac Studio running OS 14.4.1.

If the disk in the burner has already been burnt, it may not be of a format that Mac OS is directly familiar with.
UDF is one such format.

I don't remember what it was burned under. A few years ago now, like ten years or better. But with your tip above it prompted me to get out an old Intel laptop running High Sierra 10.13.6 and it and about 20 other old CDs were all readable.
Thanks for your help, that little comment was just enough to help me understand what was going on and what I should try next.
The disk has been burnt but it was burnt under an earlier version on the Mac OS.
Significantly older versions of Mac OS may not be legible, or the media may have simply failed. Do know how old it is and the made under and when?
