Adding external photos to Photo

HI all,

I am a photographer and take lots of photos.

I have decided to use Apple photo as my software.

I have an external drive with my photos on it. (where i want them to stay)

I have made another library within Apple Photo

But when i import a folder it duplicates them again on my hard drive again. (which i dont want)

1/. Is there a way i can import my folders already without duplicating.?

2/. And can i have a folder organisation as all my images are in seperate folders?

Be Aware: many people have had some sad experiences using a Referenced Library with Photos. Photos just isn't built to keep up with where the folders are and what to do if they've moved. You'll have to be very careful. If you decide to change the way the folders are organized, dividing folders up into sub-folders, for instance, Photos may not be able to keep up. Keep in mind that Photos doesn't change a picture when it's edited and cropped-- it records the steps, and then it re-applies those steps next time you look at the picture. When you add comments or change dates, for instance, this doesn't happen on the picture, itself, but is recorded in Photos' database. If the connections are lost because the files move, then all of that information will no longer be associated with the picture. Hence, sadness. And I'm not really sure how Photos will respond with a referenced library on an external disk that is disconnected and re-connected.

For me, I copy the pictures from my SD cards to folders on my internal drive. I then import these files to Photos, where they are copied and kept inside of the Library package. There are now two copies of the pictures. I move (copy then delete) those folders to an external drive as an archive. (I usually keep a month's worth on the internal drive for quick reference, since I have the room.) I consider having two copies of the pictures is wise-- it's called a backup! (Having lived through a drive disaster or two, I keep more than two copies, and on more than two drives.)

Much of the power of Photos is not just pretty strong editing, but Photos' ability to organize the pictures. Adding keywords, titles, captions, and so on helps you find the one you want. You can have Folders of albums, and Folders of Folders. On a Mac you can have multiple Libraries to keep them more manageable. As muguy said, you can import a folder of Finder folders into Photos, and it will maintain the structure (though it seems to me that it adds an extra level, somehow.)

Think hard before using a Referenced Library with Photos rather than a Managed Library where pictures are "owned" by the Library!
