On my M1 iMac running 14.4.1, Mac mail will say downloading x email messages, and then when it finishes there are NO new email messages anywhere.

Nope; that is NOT the problem. No Favorites.
Sorry, that was typo. Should have read no NEW Favorites.
It is still happening, and new incoming messages are nowhere to be found.
Even after flipping all carets.
Mail on iMac says downloading x number of emails, but there are no new email after finishing
