How can I fix loud static when using only one AirPod?

If I try to use only one I get very loud static unless I put the other on too. I’ve tried making them mono, static. I’ve tried pushing all sound to one air pod, static. Suggestions? I want to listen to audiobooks and do other things, too. Also that way one is always charged.
