Apple wants >$700 to replace the screen. Looks like I can buy a new screen for about $300. Instructional videos are available, so I'm keen to do the repair myself. The guy at the genius bar mentioned that there is a piece of software that they run to pair the new screen with the laptop once its replaced. Is anyone familiar with that software/process? Is it necessary?

But apart from that, the current year's MacBook Air should be repairable at no cost under your statutory warranty. Have you investigated this?

Gosh. How helpful. As Tim noted, I wouldn't be asking this question if the repair were covered under warranty, would I?
The warranty does not cover accidental damage or abuse. If Apple is citing a price to repair it, it's undoubtedly something that isn't covered.
Without advice on what has or hasn't been asked nobody could tell.
