Missing support for compressed Fujifilm RAW photos (.RAF)

The latest versions of macOS, iOS and iPadOS still do not support compressed Fujifilm RAW photos (.RAF).

Uncompressed .RAF files are supported.

I am looking for a way to have Finder.app previews for those kinds of images, and to be able to open them in Preview.app and Photos.app.

Even the default photos app on a recent OnePlus smartphone (Android) can open this file!

Apple, please add support for this file format.

It would be a perfect world if one RAW spec supported all cameras that shot in that format but that is not the case.

Each camera model supported in Apple's camera RAW requires its unique vendor-submitted data. There is no RAF, NEF, RW2, CR3, ARW, etc that applies to all specific vendor camera RAW photos. Some application vendors may be presenting the embedded JPEG file in the RAW format spoofing you into believing they support that particular camera RAW format.

MacOS is a UNIX operating system that is not based on Android or any Linux. How applications and utilities on those other operating systems handle camera RAW formats is unique to them.

I am not employed by Apple and not making any excuses for them. No Apple employees participate in these public user-supported communities.

Apple is dependent on the camera vendor providing them with the data necessary to create the Apple camera RAW support for a given camera model. Sure, it is doable if Apple wants to do it, and they have the vendor data available, engineering resources to implement and test, and then get it scheduled for some future release date.

The Finder on a given release of macOS must query the camera RAW database to determine if that RAW image is supported for icon view, Quick Look, or Preview viewing. Without that support, there is no Finder RAW image support possible and Apple does not extract the JPEG from the RAW image. If a camera model RAW support is added in Sonoma 14.5, it won't be available for any prior release of macOS.

To be blunt, adding raw support does not seem to be a priority these days for Apple. So, some cameras are never supported, some partially supported and some fully so. The only logic I can see in Apple's approach is that they don't expect serious photographers using expensive cameras to try and manage their work with give-away apps.

Options: Convert the raws to DNG with Adobe's free converter.

or

Use a third party app to manage these (and if you wish) all you photos. Apps like Adobe's Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, CaptureOne, DxO Photo Lab, Mylio and others have their own raw support and tend to be faster and more complete in the support they offer.

Those are your options. How you fell about the situation I suggest you tell Apple, via the feedback mechanism.

I fully understand there are different raw formats and that macOS is not Linux or Android.

Making excuses as to why this might be difficult to implement is not of help.

If Apple did not solve difficult things, we would not be typing these comments on our MacBooks.

If competing applications and operating systems can implement this feature, it must be doable.

I merely want Finder.app and Preview.app to be able to handle this file format.

Be it Apple written software, or some kind of plugin that would improve this workflow for me.

Even just showing the embedded JPEG data in Finder.app would be progress.
