apple asked for a $1400+tax quote to repair my Mac book pro due to liquid damage. I was like this is a price to buy a new one. Should I pay for that or just buy a refurbished one which is $200 more without tax?

Seems like an easy decision to me. Get the refurbished one, and AppleCare+ (which covers liquid damage... although the service fee is a bit high).

The best thing to do is not leave food or drink near the computer. My college computer lab was very strict about that, and wouldn't allow their lab to be used by anyone caught with it for 30 days.
Electronics doesn't mix well with water or sugars in water.
I have my Apple care + and it is not covered for water damage.
