Disk Recovery Fail

I have an older macbook air from 2014. i tried to give it a factory reset and think i deleted an important part of the drive - when in recovery mode (cmd+r) there is no disk to reinstall, and in disk utility only disk0 and OS X Base system are available so i'm not able to use first aid or restore anything that ive read online - please help!
