How do I get into an iPad that is passcode locked?

I signed my old iPad out of my cloud and let a roommate use it but when I had to kick him out my ipad now has a passcode that I don't know. How do I get back in to the device?

See: If you forgot your iPad passcode, use your Mac or PC to reset it - Apple Support

Note that the above instructions will help with the passcode issue but if the roommate signed the iPad into their Apple ID it won't resolve the activation lock issue.

If he did sign into your iPad with his Apple ID, it will then have an Activation Lock. You will need your original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple seller to remove the lock. A third party receipt will not be accepted. This will be evident when you erase the device to reset the passcode.

To add to Fox’s reply …

… and Apple might not help you w/ Activation Lock unless you can provide substantial proof of ownership.

This is generally understood to be an Apple (or authorized Apple reseller) purchase receipt which includes the device’s serial number.

So … BE NICE to that roommate you kicked-out. You are at some risk of permanently loosing access to your own device.
